Conditions we Treat

Perinatal Mood & Anxity

Pregnancy is time filled with mixed emotions; many women feel overwhelmed, sad, or anxious at different times during their pregnancy and even after the baby is born. For many women, these feelings go away on their own, but for approximately 20% of women and men, these emotions are more serious. If you are feeling sad, depressed, irritable, anxious, panicky, out of control, or are experiencing difficulty bonding with your baby, upsetting thoughts, appetite, or sleep changes, you may have a perinatal mood of anxiety disorder.

Our medical team is committed to helping women and their families cope with the unique emotional and psychological challenges that can come with pregnancy. Our nurse practitioner has published a paper on this topic and specializes in managing these conditions. She has extensive knowledge of the safety of using medications during the child-bearing years, including pregnancy and breast feeding. We are here to provide the care and support needed for this special and important time in a woman's life.

Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS) & Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD)

Many women who menstruate will experience mild PMS. Common symptoms of PMS include manageable emotional changes, breast tenderness, increased appetite, abdominal bloating and bowel changes in the week leading up to their period. While PMS can range in severity, it is not usually associated with an increased difficulty of completing daily tasks at home, work, or school, and as such, does not typically require medical intervention.

PMDD is a mental health disorder that affects approximately 6% of menstruating women. PMDD is often associated with intense anger, irritability, anxiety, depression, and emotional changes that occur up to 2 weeks prior to the onset of the period and a complete resolution of symptoms once the period starts. . PMDD causes a disruption in a women's life, making it challenging to complete the daily tasks she otherwise would not have difficulty with; this may include lack of interest in hobbies, sleep & appetite changes, problems with work, school, home-life, or relationships, along with the symptoms of PMS. Women with PMDD have complete resolution of symptoms with the period onset.

Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS)

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) can cause a wide range of symptoms, both physical and psychological. PCOS can cause hormonal and menstrual irregularities, infertility, insulin resistance, excess and male patterned body hair, and is strongly associated with depression and anxiety. Women with PCOS may struggle with their self-image and identity, social relationships, intimacy, and sexuality, along with physical and mental health. Evidence is limited in why as many as 40% of women with PCOS experience increased rates of anxiety, depression, and eating disorders, though many suggest it is a result of androgen (sex hormones) excess.  At Bella Vita, we have over 15 years of managing PCOS and understand the complex relationship between  hormones and mood. We will work closely with you to manage the challenges associated with PCOS.

PTSD

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder

PTSD can occur after you have been through a traumatic event. The word "trauma" is used for many different types of experiences that are stressful. But not all stressful events are the type of trauma that can lead to PTSD. If you have experienced abuse, been in physical danger, or a life-threatening situation, you may have PTSD. Many individuals believe that if they just bury these memories, they will go away; unfortunately, that is not usually the case. Many individuals with unprocessed trauma experience anxiety, panic, difficulty with focus and concentration, sleep disturbances, generalized body pain. The good news is that with medications and specialized trauma therapy, many will recover and begin to feel better!

Sleep-Wake Disorders

Sleep-Wake Disorders

Sleep difficulties are linked to both physical and emotional problems. Sleep problems may contribute to or exacerbate mental health conditions and can be a symptom of other mental health conditions. Sleep disorders often cause difficulty in inducing and maintaining sleep, often resulting in daytime fatigue, and functional impairment. Sleep-wake disorders often occur among parents with young children, individuals with stressful school or job scheduled, along with medical or mental health conditions, such as anxiety, mood disorders, trauma, cognitive delays, or the hormonal dysfunction that often accompanies peri- and post-menopause. Insomnia is the most common sleep-wake disorder. Other sleep-wake disorders include obstructive sleep apnea, narcolepsy, and restless leg syndrome, or parasomnias (sleep paralysis, night terrors, sleepwalking, sleep-talking, or sleep-related eating disorders).

We understand the importance of rest and relaxation for overall health and wellbeing. That’s why we are dedicated to helping you get a good night’s sleep. With our comprehensive evaluations and treatments for sleep disorders, you can rest assured that you are in good hands.

Ketamine Assisted Services

Ketamine has gained attention in recent times for its potential in treating various mental health conditions, such as depression, alcoholism, substance dependencies, PTSD, and other psychiatric diagnoses, as well as for facilitating existential and psychological growth. It has various forms of administration, including intranasal (Esketamine/Spravato), sublingual oral troches, and intramuscular (IM) injections, often used in conjunction with psychotherapy. However, it's important to note that that sublingual oral Ketamine troches and IM Ketamine, with or without psychotherapy (KAP), is being used “off-label,” which means it is not approved by the FDA to treat mental heath conditions.

Benefits of Ketamine assisted therapy include increased access to traumatic memories, without the pain and anxiety that often accompany them, while increasing the neuroplasticity in the brain. This can change the footprint of traumatic memories, while improving symptoms of anxiety, depression, and overall wellbeing. We have teamed up with psychedelic-trained therapists to offer Ketamine-Assisted therapy and provider you with access to the highest quality of care, in the safest environment possible.

Eating Disorders & Disordered Eating

Eating Disorders & Disordered Eating

Eating disorders are behavioral conditions characterized by persistent and severe eating patterns, that are associated with intrusive and distressing thoughts and emotions. Eating disorders are common, affecting approximately 7 million people world wide.  Common eating disorders include anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, binge-eating,  and avoidant/restrictive eating. Eating disorders can be serious and may lead to long-term medical problems. With proper medical care, individuals with eating disorders can learn how to adapt healthier eating habits, thereby, improving their physical, emotional, and psychological health.

Disordered eating is also common and often less serious than an eating disorder. Disordered eating is often associated with similar behavioral patterns of eating disorders, but they occur to a lesser degree and are not as severe; typical patterns include restrictive eating, chronic dieting, and a preoccupation with food. However, disordered eating is not without risk. Individuals with disordered eating will occasionally develop an eating disorder. At Bella Vita, we have experience in treating eating disorders and can provide ongoing support and guidance to help you achieve a healthier relationship with food.
